Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Quad in Sunset Seduction Review & Swatches

Repurchase: Yes
Price: $9.99 (I think it got raised to around $10.79 at CVS) (0.9 oz)
Product: 22/25
Packaging: 4/5
Value: 6.5/10
Overall Grade: B-

I picked up the Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Quad in Sunset Seduction a few weeks ago at CVS. The quads caught my eye when they first came out but none of the shades ever sparked my interest. However, I finally budged because I was curious to see how the quality compared to Mayblline's Expert Wear eyeshadows.

The Packaging: The 4 eyeshadows are housed in a sleek black palette with a clear lid. I would've loved a mirror but I guess I can't expect too much from the drugstore. I do like that the palette is tinier and more compact compared to other drugstore palettes although it still could break if I were to drop it. I don't have much use for the double-sided sponge applicator included but it's nice for touch ups if I forget my eye brushes.

Ingredients
The Product: I feel that the quad contains a lot less product than my other drugstore quads and palettes. This contains .09 oz or product while Maybelline's other quads contain .17 oz. Even my NYC quad contains .12 oz and my Wet 'n' Wild Color Icon palette contains .25 oz (both cheaper than this quad.) So at a tiny .09 oz, I'd expect the price to be lower but it's actually on the higher end of the (drugstore) price scale.

The eyeshadow itself is fairly pigmented and smooth except for some very minor chalkiness during application. Also, with a primer, the eyeshadow is very pigmented and lasts all day (around 10 hours give or take.) The eyeshadows blend effortlessly and easily and they're really fuss free. These are great drugstore eyeshadows -I'd place them on the "higher end" of drugstore eyeshows (better than Wet 'n' Wild and around the same quality level as Revlon's Luxurious Color eyeshadows.)

The Color: (from left to right as displayed above)

1. Pale white with iridescent pink shimmer
2. Tangerine salmon peach with shimmer
3. Frosty tanned taupe with silver shimmer
4. Dark warm brown with copper shimmer

Overall: I do really like this eyeshadow quad although I would've preferred even better color payoff (even though it's good already.) Quality-wise, I'd give it around a B to B+ (I was a bit lenient on grading) but to me, the value wasn't there to make me want to give it a B/B+ overall grade. I do recommend picking this up -the 2nd shade (tangerine peach) packs a nice punch and stands out from my usual go-to neutrals.

Where To Buy: CVS, Rite Aid

  1. I need to try these again. I got the mauve/green one, mad for mauve, and the color payoff was pretty average (i thought my wet 'n' wild palettes were better). the colors are so pretty in this one! thanks for your review :)

  3. @ Steph.. To me, SOME of the Wet 'n' Wild eyeshadows had better payoff but they were a lot chalkier whereas the Maybelline eyeshadows are smoother and blend more easily. I wouldn't say the Maybelline shadows have amazing payoff but it ranges from good to great (at least for this palette.) And as always, a primer will make everything 10x better.

@ Anonymous.. Yea! sort of. I'd say the Snake Charmer palette is warmer though. =)

  4. They have these at Walmart/Target too, for about $7.50! I've been hanging on to a $2 off coupon waiting to see if I could find it cheaper, but I didn't know it was that much more expensive elsewhere!

  5. I wanted to buy this in copper chic but they didn't have it so I got the eyestudio hyper diamond palette,I don't know if you can get it there or not because they told me it was asia exclusive (just like the lumilift foundation)but the palette is really really good I think for a drugstore brand maybelline's products are really nice so far none of them have disappointed me

@ Alvira.. Wow.. The Hyper Diamond Palette sounds nice (love the name.) I really like Maybelline too -I think the brand is one of the "better" drugstore brands.

    @ Christine.. I agree. =)
